Global Mindset

The set of individual attributes that enable and facilitate global leadership

My Capabilities and what I'm working on:

Psychological Capital: Quest for Adventure

A quest for adventure deals with handling challenging situations, a willingness to take risks, willingness to test my abilities, and enjoying dealing with these unpredictable situations.

How did I work on this?

This semester I took a big risk - I quit my stable, leasing job, and took on an internship in the non-profit sector. For a long time, I have been afraid of the inevitable debt that I am going to have to pay back once I am finished college. And I thought I had to take a job in financial consulting if I ever wanted to pay back those loans. Well sure, working for a high paying job will allow me to pay off my loans a little quicker, but I really would not be enjoying myself. So I took a risk, and followed my real dream: Development. I received a position with AAUW, a non-profit in D.C. working to empower the lives of women and girls around the world. In this position, I research, prospect, and make the initial outreach for new funding from corporations and foundations to fund the AAUW programs. It is an exciting, high-stakes job, becuase non-profits need big checks and corporation backing to succeed in today's world. My department is small, with only four people, but we work to bring in 5 and 6 digit funding by putting our non-profit out there and working to collaborate with companies who need to focus on empowering their women and giving them the chance to thrive. I'm hoping to stay in the non-profit world, even if it means I won't pay my student loans off for a long time. It will be a risk, but I am ready for the adventure.

Social Capital: Diplomacy

Being diplomatic involves the ease of starting a conversation with a stranger, the ability to integrate diverse perspectives, an ability to listen to what others have to say, and a willingness to collaborate.

How did I work on this?

As a global student, it is important not to isolate myself to my normal group of friends and in an environment I am easily comfortable in. The Smith School allows a seamless transition for diplomatic students through the MANY group projects that are required for most 200+ level courses. But classroom knowledge has to translate into real life if we want it to be successful. So this semester, I joined the International Club in D.C.. This club provided many opportunities for me to network in different cultural situations that I have never been in before. From International Women's Day at the Austrian Embassy, to small happy hours with other international club members - these events really allowed me to lower my social anxiety when it came to meeting people with diverse backgrounds. For example, my willingness and ability to approach one of my international interviewees: Jorge Benavides. I approached him in a Starbucks because I noticed he was reading "Thank You For Being Late" and I could not resist asking him what brought him to read the book. Read more about his interview here

Intellectual Capital: Cosmopolitan Outlook

To have a cosmopolitan outlook, you must have a knowledge of cultures in different parts of the world, knowledge of geography, history, and important persons of several countries, knowledge of economic and political issues, concerns, hot topics of major parts of the world, and be up-to-date knowledge of important world events.

How did I work on this?

The main activity I participated in this semester to update my cosmopolitan outlook involved reading two-three newspapers everyday, getting updates on my phone from those news sources, and listening to NPR and pod casts while exercising. Keeping my international and regional knowledge up to date made me realize how out-of-touch I really was with today's news. Normally, I relied on facebook, twitter, and email blasts to get the most important news and fads of today - but there is much more to this world and I am happy I was able to explore my world through news sources that are so easily at my fingertips.

Global Events I Attended:

Global Mindset Assessment Results:

Unfortunately, I was not able to attend class on April 4th, 2017 when the global mindset simulation occurred. I was attending an Equal Pay Day Event with my internship at AAUW. Therefore I did not get any results back from the assessment to discuss. This absence was discussed previously with Professor Wellman and there was not a make-up assignment offered. The simulation was not originally supposed to occur on this day, but because of a snow storm before Spring Break, the class had to be shifted around and fell on April 4th. Please find my excuse notice in an email, as well as placed here on my website as a reminder.
